Radon Testing
We voluntarily conduct radon testing in our schools as part of its commitment to maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment. While radon testing is not currently required by law, it is recommended by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The District has chosen to follow this guidance as a proactive safety measure.
Summary of Results
Radon testing was conducted in all schools in spring and summer of 2025. Two schools had specific rooms with elevated levels:
School | Location(s) | Action |
---|---|---|
Alice Gustafson Elementary | Classroom 147 | Mitigation system installed |
Batavia High School | Classroom D110; Offices B101E, B100G, B100J | Mitigation systems scheduled for installation |
Test Results
All other tested locations were below the EPA action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). No action is needed at those sites.
